Gallery Talk "The Ageless Portrait"

"The Ageless Portrait"

October 16, 2:00 p.m.

Presented by Marilyn Levitt with remarks by juror, Jennie Summerall

Marilyn LevittIn conjunction with “See You, See Me” the BGA is pleased to present a Gallery Talk on “The Ageless Portrait” by Boston-area painter and art historian Marilyn Levitt, Professor Emeritus at Rider University in New Jersey. Levitt’s talk will discuss the historical aspect of portrait painting through the ages using a variety of classic portrait images. The “Ageless Portrait” will also feature remarks by Belmont portrait painter Jennie Summerall, guest juror for “See You, See Me,” on the works she selected for the show.

Jennie SummerallLevitt, whose work is featured in “See You, See Me,” holds both a B.A. and M.A. in Art History from Syracuse University.  She has exhibited in galleries on the east coast as well as in Canada and has written articles on art education in a number of publications. Since moving to Boston 14 years ago she has been giving art history lectures throughout the area.

”There is a magical connection between a portrait painter, the sitter and a viewer,” says Levitt.  “To really look at a portrait is to see more than a likeness. A portrait painter seeks to express, in pigment, an aspect of the sitter that cannot be told in words. The personality, emotion of the moment becomes a shared experience.  Through the portrait we can expand our understanding of others and perhaps ourselves as well. I hope my talk will motivate people to look more carefully at portraits and enjoy the results,” she says.

"The Ageless Portrait" talk is free and open to the public. The Gallery will open at 1:00 p.m. for regular gallery hours on Sunday, October 16. The Gallery Talk will begin at 2:00 p.m. For more information contact Gallery Administrator, Nan Rogers at 617-276-5760.
