Cuba From a Different Angle

April 10 – May 15, 2015

Photographs by Jonathan Hansen

BGA-CUBA-Postcard-front-800px

Jonathan Hansen, Senior Lecturer on Social Studies and Faculty Associate, David Rockefeller Center for Latin American Studies at Harvard University, is currently working on a biography of Fidel Castro (Young Castro, to be published by Simon and Schuster). Research for the book provides frequent occasions to travel to  Cuba. While on these trips, he has become inspired by Cuban people and culture, and has taken many intriguing photographs which are shown in this exhibit.

Guest Curator: Astrid Martinez-Jones, Founder/Director of Latin Art Space.
Artist Gallery Talk: April 30, 7:30pm

As a historian, I am drawn to the sedimentary quality of private lives, public spaces, and political and cultural institutions. The collection of photographs, taken while at work on a biography of the young Fidel Castro, represents my attempt to capture the geological layers of Cuba’s built environment, while conveying the dynamism and exhuberance of its social life.”
