“This exhibit takes its title from a less-than-profound observation. We cannot see through, beyond or beneath the surface of things. Hence, in the visible world, home to the visual arts, everything is superficial.
The great Sir Laurence Olivier’s was once asked, ”why did you choose acting as a career?” He replied, “look at me, look at me, look at me, look at me, look at me.” Like Olivier, I am motivated to show off what I can do, how I can pull-off the remarkable feat of using paint on a two dimensional surface to create an illusion of a 3D subject. This is particularly satisfying if the subject is challenging or tricky – like a moving, reflective, faceted, translucent or textured surface.
So, initially, my intention was a simple stretching exercise, nothing more. I set myself a goal to complete, everyday, a new painting of some particularly challenging subject. Some days the muse was with me. As the walls surrounding you attest, on others she was not. Nonetheless, over the course of four months in early 2017, I managed to complete 111 individual ‘studies.’ As the work progressed, however, a more ambitious objective took shape in my thoughts – to meld all these desultory images into a single coherent installation, a sort-of mosaic tableau or panorama.
Look what I did! Look what I did! Look what I did!”

The New Works exhibition of the Belmont Art Association (BAA) offers an opportunity to see the recent works of artists—both amateur and professional—who live and work in our community. Showcasing work by BAA members, the exhibit includes work in a wide variety of media from painting, drawing, printmaking and collage, to sculpture, ceramics, textiles, and photography.
Founded in 2013, the Belmont Art Association’s mission is to “create a community of and for Belmont-based visual artists by sharing information and resources and creating opportunities to display their work.” For more information about the organization visit their website.
The Belmont Art Association (BAA), in partnership with the Belmont Gallery of Art (BGA), presents a series of four special summer art-making events on Thursday evenings. All workshops take place 7-9pm at the Belmont Gallery of Art.
Rick Corbett. Corbett, an award winning pencil artist/portraitist will demonstrate his personal process of creating a portrait based on light as well as structure to capture the personality of his subject. An example of Corbett’s work is below:
Naomi Ellenberg-Dukas, of DukasDesigns, will demonstrate Japanese beaded braiding to create a single strand kumihimo bracelet. This technique has unlimited designs and varying degrees of complexity, but this will start with the basics. Materials will be supplied to 10 attendees (by lottery to those present). Naomi is President of Beadesigner International/New England Bead Society.
Drawing the Human Figure from Imagination and Life – led by Damon Lehrer. Lehrer has taught at RISD, Boston University, Art Institute of Boston, Mass College of Art, and Montserrat College of Art. Founder of Boston Figurative Art Center, Somerville.
Come try your hand at drawing a clothed live model. BAA artists will be on hand to offer tips and advice to workshop attendees.
Art supplies will be provided for workshop attendees. Some events will feature brief talks by participating BAA artists about their individual art-making techniques and influences. Refreshments will be served. Free admission.

We are very pleased to show the work of a Belmont High School graduate, Jerry Suh! She came to the U.S. with her family in 2007. With the encouragement and guidance of Belmont High art teacher, Mark Milowksy, Jerry’s art blossomed. She began to find great success, winning a couple of awards and receiving a full scholarship to Savannah College of Art and Design, where she graduated with a BFA in animation in 2015.
Here are a few excerpts from Rebecca Richards’ interview of Jerry:
I always liked drawing as long as I can remember, haha. I knew I seriously liked cartoon when I was in the 6th grade in elementary school (I know, how serious can a 6th year old be) after completing my first cartoon series in 4 years.
Milo [Mark Milowsky] was my biggest influence. I could possibly not be doing art right now (even though I doubt it) if I didn’t meet him.
Art wise, it was Prince of Egypt. The first time I watched it, I was 8 or 9 years old or something. It’s so funny to think of 9-year old me, but 9 year old me teared up watching the first shot of the film because I thought it was so beautiful.”
I work completely digital on a Cintiq now using Photoshop. Coming up with the concept and the story behind the paintings is the most important stage. Especially for animation, storytelling is considered the most critical skills.
I love people in this industry. I honestly believe that you can’t have a evil spirit if you are working for animation. My (unproved) theory is that if you like cartoons and work for it, you must be a kid at heart for some degree. I’ve never really imagined my life without pursuing animation, so working for animation feels very natural to me. But the goodness of people in this industry was something that I didn’t expect/know, and I feel very lucky to be part of it.
Art feels very natural to me. The best part of making art is that I can be myself. It’s like wearing clothes that fits me perfectly. I don’t mind spending hours and hours working. But it doesn’t mean that it lets me down sometimes because I want to reach the best of my potential and it doesn’t work like that all the time. I went through so many ups and downs while pursing art and there were times I even questioned to myself if art was really for me. Pursuing passion can be a very lonely journey sometimes. But I realized that passion is not always about joy but also about pain. I am going through all ups and downs as an artist and I am willing to because it matters to me that much. So in that sense, the best part of making art and following my passion is that it makes me strong as a person.
My near future career goal is to work for a feature animation and see my name in the theater with my family as the credit goes up. It swells my heart to imagine that moment. My long-term career goal is to be a Director of Photography of a feature film.

During the summer months, works by Richard Hill will be featured in our gallery. It’s always fun to discover the personalities portrayed in his “Collective Iconographies.”
Hill describes his “Collective Iconographies” as assembling and juxtaposing multiple iconic portraits and grouping them together thematically. Images are drawn from a wide array of familiar media – magazine covers, coins, sculpture, photographs, comic books and the like. Each painting seeks to faithfully imitate the style, medium and vocabulary of the original images to ensure that they are readily recognizable.
At bottom, these works seek to create something wholly original and unexpected by combining materials that are old, familiar, iconic – like ‘sampling’ in pop music. I have used the term ‘Group Iconography’ to describe these paintings, chiefly because I couldn’t come up with anything more pretentious sounding. These works are pastiches that assemble and juxtapose multiple iconic portraits.” — Richard Hill
Visit our gallery and enjoy the humorous, thoughtful, and sometimes quirky juxtapositions in each piece.
All of Richard’s work can be viewed on his website. Go visit!

The Belmont Gallery of Art’s spring show is a collaboration with the Belmont Public Library. The juried “Family Ties” exhibit is inspired by author Anita Diamant’s “The Boston Girl,” the book selected for the Belmont Public Library’s 2016 One Book, One Belmont Town-wide read event.
Diamant’s best-selling novel tells the story of 85-year-old Addie Baum, recounting her life growing up in Boston’s neighborhoods in the early 20th century. The novel touches upon several themes, but family and family relationships are central to the story. How one interprets the theme of “family” has been left up to each individual artist.
Work has been selected from visual arts media including painting, photography, drawing, mixed media, printmaking, collage, flat fiber art, digital media and sculpture.
April 8, 2016; 7-9pm
This blog post, written by one of the participating artists (Anne Katzeff), talks about some of the memories behind her artwork.
For more information about One Book One Belmont, visit their website.
The Boston Girl’s author Anita Diamant will give a talk in Belmont, on April 26 as part of this year’s One Book One Belmont event.
