An exhibition of works by Belmont art teachers
Opening Reception: Friday, September 20, 6-8 p.m.
Off the Clock offers a unique glimpse at the work of artists who share a common thread in their dedication to teaching art to students in Belmont schools. The work of these teaching artists includes a variety of media including oils, acrylics, fiber, photography, printmaking and mixed media.
Initially conceived of in 2007 by artist/teacher Nicole Pond, the first Off the Clock show was installed during the summer of 2008. With the success of the show and enthusiastic feedback from the community, the BGA committee agreed to revisit the theme in the future. Serving as show coordinator for the 2013 installment, Nicole sees the Off the Clock exhibit as an opportunity for people in the community to see what art teachers are creating as individual artists.
“I think it is important for people to physically see what you create,” says Pond.
“Here we are, teachers with all these credentials, discussing art history, color mixing, and art-making techniques with our students, without their seeing how we use the same information. I think it is important to show that we’re practicing artists as well as teachers of art.”
Artists participating in Off the Clock include Kathleen Byrnes, Danette English, Regina Kalajian, Katherine Kelley, Catherine Larkin, Sarah Libertini, Mark Milowsky, Nicole Pond, Kristen Ripley, Andrew Roy and Kathy Jo Solomon.
Here’s an opportunity for gallery visitors to see the work these teachers have created when they’re away from school and working Off the Clock in their medium of choice. Off the Clock runs September 20 through October 20.
