Have you ever thought about the myriad of variations of color? Or paused to think about the exuberance color can express? Jane Hanenberg has and her paintings exhibit just how much she enjoys the “tactile experience of paint–the richness of its colors, and the sense of possibility they invite.”

Hanenberg considers herself a “Sunday painter”, referencing her dedication to family, a full time career in psychology, and a need to paint. She has navigated this delicate balance rather successfully for years. The Color of Lemons is Hanenberg’s first major solo show, perhaps representing the fruits of her discipline and those many Sunday painting sessions.

Hanenberg says she has “always” painted. “As a child, I was fortunate to attend lessons at a traditional, but tolerant studio. I’ll never forget the instructor, who circled the artists, who were mostly adults, and quizzed us about the varieties of cadmium, the types of perspective, and the rule of fat over lean.”

Today, her work is infused with energy and passion as she explores the use of color to convey feeling and mood. Works shown are primarily still life paintings and landscapes done in oil over the past several years with inspiration derived from random objects, “favorite things” and travel. A subset of paintings done in acrylic paint with fabric and decorative paper collage, accented by gold and silver metal powders, were inspired by a trip to Southern Spain and the abundant Moorish decorative motifs of that region.
