Lee Strasburger’s one-woman show “Anatomy of Melancholy” is presented in partnership with the Belmont Public Library’s “One Book, One Belmont” 2012 town-wide reading event. Strasburger’s quiet, contemplative graphite drawings and miniature watercolors of landscapes and seascapes complement this year’s One Book, One Belmont’s selection, “The Leftovers” by Tom Perrotta, in which he describes the struggle of those people left behind in the aftermath of a Rapture-like event. The body of work Strasburger exhibits here echoes simialr themes as those found in Perrotta’s novel; subtle expressions of the struggle of politics and love, life and death.

A native of Carmel, California, Strasburger cites many influences in her art, particularly a lifelong love of the sea, the coastline and nature. Literature has also been a significant influence and recently, the work of poets of the British Romantic movement, circa 1820, has drawn Strasburger to conduct an in-depth study with a focus on the life and letters of John Keats whose aesthetic appreciation closely reflects her own.

The landscapes that I make are intertwined with my love for literature as well as places that have inspired me.”
