“Inspired by Winslow Homer” features contemporary works by 27 local artists. Susan Smart, who recently curated “Winslow Homer’s Croquet Summer” at Belmont’s historic Homer House, served as guest curator for the exhibit. As indicated by the show title, artists were invited to take inspiration–either literally or figuratively–from the great American artist Winslow Homer and his themes; man’s struggle against the sea, women and children engaged in daily tasks or at leisure, and the relationship between man and nature.

How one interpreted Homer’s theme was left up to each individual artist, making for a variety of approaches to Homer’s inspiration and a unique show as a result.

Works exhibited here were created using techniques and materials used by Winslow Homer in his own work, including illustration, printmaking, watercolor and oil or acrylic painting. “Homer’s work has such breadth, humanity and timelessness; it speaks to everyone,” says juror Susan Smart. “And to have this exhibit in Winslow Homer’s Belmont, in a building designed by his cousin, is truly exciting.”

Considered one of the greatest American artists, the Winslow Homer connection to Belmont is strong. Though often associated and thought of as a Maine artist, Homer actually summered for many years at the William Flagg Homer House on Pleasant Street in Belmont.

One of his most recognized paintings, “Boys in a Pasture” was painted in Belmont in 1874. The Homer Building, site of the Belmont Gallery of Art, was designed by and named for Winslow’s architect cousin, Eleazar Homer.
