Muriel Angelil is a sculptor, printmaker and painter. She has done extensive work in a variety of media including fiber, paper pulp, acrylics, oils and watercolor. The body of work exhibited in Memories of Egypt includes abstract figurative paintings, monotypes and collages. All are informed by her childhood experiences growing up in Alexandria, Egypt and are both autobiographical as well as observant of the environment in which she was raised. Angelil explains,

Little girls, dancers, horses and Arab women are part of my visual language. Using impasto strokes to accentuate color and shapes, I create a sense of mystery or spirituality.”

Angelil’s colors reflect the Mediterranean Sea, the sand in the dessert and the gold used in the icons of her church.

Muriel Angelil is a graduate of the American University of Beirut, Rhode Island School of Design, and Vermont College of Fine Arts. Additionally, she has studied art in Egypt, California, Mexico and Massachusetts. Angelil’s sculptural work often involves site specific installations in parks and nature centers in the greater Boston area such as Serendipity in Blue, an installation of wrapped trees in Maudslay State Park in Newburyport, MA (September 2011).
